The rivalry between so-called "professional" china artists, who painted repeated designs on sets of tableware, and the "hobbyists," who painted one-of-a-kind pieces, is an interesting one. The pros became experts at a single item (insects, birds, foliage) and could repeat them with exacting precision. The hobbyist, while not highly trained, could more freely chose subject, color and location on any piece she desired to create personal pieces for themselves or on commission. It's a fascinating subject to explore.
This tall porcelain vase features hand painted cherry blossoms in pink on a pale blue-gray background, which lends an ethereal tone to the piece. The 22-karat gold paint on the handles is typical of the period.
the decoration is signed "Melton". Although without a makers mark, this is likely a Wasserman vase.
